Word Order

The Japanese structure is SOV but Japanese is quite flexible when it comes to word order.

For example, you can say :

object Eiga

particle Wo

subject Seiya

particle Wa

verb Miru

Instead of Seiya Wa Eiga Wo Miru.

Because particles identify what role a word is playing.

So even if you change the word order, as long as you use the right particles, we can know which one is the object and which one is the subject.

We can even say:

subject Seiya

particle Wa

verb Miru

object Eiga

particle Wo

I told you that a verb always comes at the end of a sentence but even if we don’t place it at the end of the sentence, we can still understand the meaning without any problems.

It just sounds odd but it still makes sense.

Always remember

The key to understanding Japanese is not the word order, but the particles!
